Terms

Effective 2026-09-10. These terms are version 2026-09-10 — the version Knowlu records beside your name on the day you accept them.

This is the agreement between you and Knowlu. It is written to be read, once, by the person it binds. Where a sentence here is about money or about cancelling, it is the sentence we will be held to.

What Knowlu is, and what it is not

Knowlu is a Windows app and a service behind it, and what it does is rank work you already have. It reads your school's calendar feed, the coursework sites you connect and — if you turn it on — your own inbox, and it answers one question every morning: what should you work on today, and in what order. It keeps what it finds as plain files on your machine and puts the day in front of you.

It is not a tutor, a grader, or a way of doing the work. Knowlu reads; it does not submit anything to your school for you. It never posts, never answers a question on your behalf, and never sends anything to an instructor. It can be wrong about what matters most today — it is ranking, not prophecy — and you are the one who decides what you actually do.

Who can use it

You must be 18 or older. When you create an account you tick a box saying so, and that statement is a term of this agreement: you are telling us you are old enough to enter into it. If you are not, do not tick it — the sign-up is declined, with the reason, and nothing is kept. We do not ask for a birthdate.

One account is one person's. See What we ask of you below.

The subscription

$9.99 per month, renewing monthly until you cancel; or $69.99 per academic year. Seven days free first, with your card taken at sign-up and not charged until the trial ends. Cancel any time in Settings.

Stripe takes the payment and holds the card; we never see a card number. Sales tax is added where a state requires it. If we ever change the price, you will hear about it by email before it happens, with the new price, the date and a link to cancel — and the change will not apply to a period you have already paid for.

The summer pause

Knowlu does not bill over the summer. If you are on the monthly plan, billing stops for June, July and August, and starts again on 1 September — the app keeps working the whole time. On the academic-year plan nothing pauses, because that price already covers the summer.

We email you when the pause ends, before the charge comes back, saying what you will be charged and how to cancel if you do not want it back. A subscription that quietly starts charging again after three silent months is exactly the thing this paragraph exists to prevent.

How to cancel

Open Knowlu, click the gear, and choose Manage subscription. That opens Stripe's billing portal in your browser, where cancelling is one click. No survey, no phone call, no email required, and nothing to keep clicking through — cancelling is not made harder than signing up was.

Every billing email carries the same way out: Stripe's receipts link straight to that portal, and our own emails say how to reach it — or you can reply to any of them and we will cancel it for you. You never have to have the app in front of you to get out. Cancelling stops the next charge and leaves you with what you have already paid for until that period ends.

The reminder we send once a year

Once a year, for as long as you are subscribed, we email you a reminder that you are — even though you did not ask for it and nothing has changed. It says what the subscription is, what it costs, how often it renews, and how to cancel: two clicks in the app, or a reply to that email, which we will act on. California requires this reminder for a monthly subscription; we send it to everyone.

Refunds

We do not refund a month you have already used. We do refund a charge you did not mean to make: a renewal after you thought you had cancelled, a first charge you did not notice at the end of the trial, or a charge after the summer pause you were never told about. Write to [email protected] within 30 days of the charge and we will refund it — one email, no argument.

If you were under 18 when you subscribed, tell us: we will refund what you paid and close the account.

Your data is yours

Your vault is a folder on your own machine, in plain files with plain names. You may read it, copy it, edit it in any editor, back it up wherever you like, and leave with it. Nothing in these terms gives us any ownership of what is in it, and nothing in the app locks it.

Deleting your account deletes what our servers hold (the privacy policy says exactly what, and what survives for how long) and the copy on the machine you delete it from. It does not reach a copy you have already taken somewhere else — that one is yours, and it stays yours.

What we ask of you

Availability, and what does not work offline

We do not promise that the service is up. It is one small business's cloud, and it will occasionally be down; when it is, we fix it and say so.

The part of Knowlu that matters most in the morning does not need us: the ranking is deterministic and runs on your machine, so today's page still appears on a train with no signal. What needs the internet is what only the cloud can do — the judgments, the calendar and email fetches, sync, and the subscription check. If we cannot be reached, Knowlu keeps working on the last answer it had for three days, and after that it keeps ranking and names the steps it is skipping instead of pretending they ran.

Ending it

You can cancel at any time, and delete everything at any time (Settings → Delete my data). Cancelling keeps the account and the vault; deleting removes both. Neither one is a refund of a period already paid for, except in the cases under Refunds.

We can close an account if the subscription goes unpaid, if the account is shared or used to attack the service, or if we stop selling Knowlu. Except where an account is doing active harm, we will email you first and give you time to get your data out; if we are the ones ending it, we refund the unused part of what you paid, and we keep what our servers hold for 30 days so you can still ask for an export before it is deleted. Your vault is on your machine either way, and closing an account never reaches into it.

The usual, said plainly

No warranties. Knowlu is provided as it is. We do not promise it is free of defects, that it will find every assignment, or that its ranking is right for you on any given day. To the extent the law allows, we disclaim the implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement.

Limit on what we owe. To the extent the law allows, Knowlu is not liable for indirect, incidental or consequential losses — a missed deadline, a grade, lost time — and our total liability to you for anything arising out of these terms is limited to the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim. Some states do not allow these limits; where that is so, they do not apply to you.

Governing law. These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Alabama, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules.

Disputes. Write to [email protected] first and give us 30 days to put it right; most things end there. If that fails, either of us may go to the state or federal courts in Alabama, and both of us agree those courts may hear it. Either of us may bring a claim in small-claims court instead. We do not require you to arbitrate, and if that ever changes we will tell you before it does and give you a way to say no.

The rest. If one part of these terms turns out to be unenforceable, the rest still stands. Not enforcing something once does not waive it. You may not transfer this agreement; we may transfer it if the business is sold, and we will tell you if that happens.

Changes to these terms

When we change these terms materially, we email the address on your account and Knowlu asks you to accept the new version, with the date on it, before you go on. Your acceptance is recorded with that version. If you do not want the new terms, cancel — and if the change is one that costs you money, cancel and we will refund the rest of the period.
